Students will learn: 

1. Comprehension
  • How to have the right mindset while reading the passages
  • The different types of questions and the skills required to answer those questions
  • The vocabulary needed to answer specific questions on tone, character, feelings etc
  • How to score well for the summary section, depending on their language ability
2. Continuous Writing & Situational Writing
  • The different types of essays and their relevant formats
  • How to unpack an essay question
  • How to create an effective outline
  • How to have an opinion, state the opinion clearly and support that opinion sufficiently 
  • Examples of good writing
  • How to write powerful introductions and conclusions
3. Editing
  • The different text types and how they influence the tense of a verb 
  • The different kinds of grammar rules that are regularly tested
  • Basic and advanced grammar rules
  • How to spot errors (not by feeling!)

Students will receive: 

  • Extra readings on current affairs or general knowledge topics that may appear in their essays or comprehension passages
  • In-class discussions on argumentative topics so that students can practice analysing an issue, developing an opinion and defending that opinion
  • Practice papers, personalized feedback and examination strategies for managing stress and achieving high scores
  • Lessons that teach and encourage critical thinking at all stages

Teacher Joy’s class is fun and interactive, using colour on our worksheets to help us portrait and further understand what is being taught. It also includes games such as Kahoot and allows me to test what I have learnt. These lessons with Teacher Joy has reinforced the topics that are taught in school, creating a deeper understanding of English for me. I have been attending Teacher Joy’s classes since P5, when my grade was AL4.
